Promise Community Health Center is proud to announce that medical assistant Heidy Hernandez has officially become a Child Passenger Safety Technician, adding an important safety resource for families in the community.
Hernandez recently completed the rigorous training and testing required to earn her certification. The process includes several days of instruction, hands-on practice, and both written and practical exams to demonstrate proper installation techniques for rear-facing, forward-facing, and booster seats. Candidates must show they can correctly secure seats using both seat belts and LATCH systems, as well as educate caregivers on proper use.

Becoming certified is no small accomplishment. Nationally, technicians are trained through standardized child passenger safety programs that emphasize current best practices, manufacturer guidelines, and state laws. In Iowa, child passenger safety is especially critical. According to state safety data, motor vehicle crashes remain a leading cause of injury for children. Properly installed car seats can significantly reduce the risk of serious injury or death in a crash. However, studies consistently show that many car seats are used or installed incorrectly, making certified technicians a vital community resource.
Iowa law requires children under the age of 6 to be secured in a child restraint system, with specific guidelines based on age and size. Safety experts also recommend that children remain rear-facing as long as possible within manufacturer limits and transition appropriately as they grow. Having a trained professional ensure a seat is properly installed can give families added peace of mind.
Hernandez said the training required dedication and focus, but she was motivated by the opportunity to better serve local families. “It’s about keeping kids safe,” she shared. “If I can help even one family feel more confident that their child is protected, it’s worth it.”
Promise Community Health Center celebrates Hernandez’s achievement and her commitment to going above and beyond for patients and the broader community.
Community members who would like to have their car seat checked are encouraged to contact Promise Community Health Center in advance. Please call ahead to confirm that Heidy is available to conduct a car seat safety check.
