Promise Community Health Center offers routine eye exams. An eye exam involves a series of tests to evaluate your vision and check for eye diseases. Promise optometrists use a variety of instruments, shine bright lights directly at your eyes and request that you look through an array of lenses. Each test during an eye exam evaluates a different aspect of your vision or eye health.

This allows optometrists at Promise to see overall systematic conditions or diseases we might otherwise miss. Also, the inside of the eye has the potential to develop its own conditions and diseases which can lead to blindness or greatly impaired vision.
A medical eye exam differs from a routine vision exam. It is an exam for evaluating or treating a medical condition. Cataracts, macular degeneration, glaucoma, corneal dystrophy, and retinal detachments, are examples of medical issues with the eyes, not things that can be fixed with glasses or contacts. A medical eye care exam looks for all of those things.

Promise Community Health Center provides required vision screenings for school-aged children. A vision screening, also called an eye test, is a brief exam that looks for potential vision problems and eye disorders. A vision screening is not a diagnostic process and does not replace a comprehensive examination by an eye doctor; but it is an appropriate and essential element of a strong public health approach to vision care. The purpose of vision screening is to increase the number of individuals in need of care who ultimately receive comprehensive eye exams and necessary treatment.
What a screening does:
- Identifies patients at high risk for eye disease or in need of a professional eye examination by conducting screening tests
- May detect disorders in an early, treatable stage
- Provides patients with valuable information and education about eye care
