Each September, communities across the country come together to raise awareness during National Suicide Prevention Month. It is a time to remember those we have lost, support those who may be struggling, and share the message that hope and help are always available.
At Promise Community Health Center, our Mental Health Department and dedicated team of mental health providers walk alongside patients every day. We are here to provide counseling, resources, and compassionate care for individuals and families facing difficult moments. We believe no one should walk through mental health challenges alone.
A Visual Reminder of Hope
This month, if you drive by Promise Community Health Center, you will see green pinwheels displayed on our front lawn. In 2023 there was an average of 500 Suicides in Iowa, Promise will have 25 pinwheels displayed, representing one for every 20 people who committed suicide that year. This display is a powerful reminder of the impact suicide has on our communities, but also a call to action — to reach out, to check in on loved ones, and to continue reducing the stigma around mental health.
How You Can Help
- Start the conversation: Ask a friend or family member how they’re really doing.
- Know the signs: Withdrawal, hopelessness, or sudden changes in behavior can be warning signs.
- Share resources: If someone is struggling, remind them they are not alone and help is available.
If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7.
