Emily Leinen, a Promise Community Healthcare Center practitioner, is enthusiastic about improving mental health awareness and destigmatizing mental health care.
Emily started working as a family nurse practitioner at Promise in January of 2021. She had previous experience working as a registered nurse in the inpatient setting as well as in the outpatient setting to include a community based health center. She knew she wanted to work in a small community. Emily was drawn by the mission of Promise Community Health Center and its leadership team, which made the move to Promise an easy decision for her.
In her initial role at Promise, Emily worked with patients on preventative care, acute and urgent care needs, wellness visits, and chronic care management across the age span. Since starting, Emily has received dual board certification and is now practicing as a psychiatric mental health and family nurse practitioner. In her work, Emily specifically focuses on patients with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and PTSD. Since Promise’s other services practice from the same location, Emily can collaborate with other medical practitioners, obstetricians, and therapists, providing holistic care to patients that cater to many facets of their health. Most recently, Emily is excited to play a role in Promise’s new mental health campaign, HERE FOR EVERY STEP.
Emily is passionate about the link between physical and mental wellbeing. On this, she says, “Our mental and physical health directly impact the other and Promise understands this as noted in our mission – to provide accessible, holistic health care that adapts to the needs of the community to improve the wellbeing of all persons. I am excited to offer a needed service, decrease the judgment and stigma surrounding mental health, and improve the wellbeing of our patients and community.”

As a psychiatric mental health and family nurse practitioner, Emily can assess and diagnose patients, order and interpret medical tests, and prescribe medication. Outside providers can call Promise Community Health Center at 712-722-1700 to refer a patient. From there, the mental health nurse will be in contact with the referring provider to gather more information and provide further direction.
