August is National Immunization Awareness Month and the perfect reminder to take a quick check of your family’s health!
Whether you are prepping a child for school, due for an adult booster, or simply trying to navigate conflicting health info, you don’t have to figure it out alone. At Promise Community Health Center, we are here to support you with clear facts and compassionate care.
HOW VACCINES WORK & WHY THEY MATTER
Immunizations act as a safe practice run for your body’s defense system. They teach your immune system to recognize and fight off harmful viruses or bacteria before you are exposed to the real thing, helping you stay protected without getting sick.
Because our health needs change as we age, recommended vaccines evolve throughout life:
- Infants & Children: Build essential early immunity with routine shots like DTaP, MMR, polio, and chickenpox, keeping kids healthy and in the classroom.
- Teens & Young Adults: Stay protected with recommendations like HPV and meningococcal vaccines.
- Adults & Seniors: Maintain long-term immunity with regular tetanus boosters, as well as protection against shingles, pneumonia, flu, COVID-19, and RSV.
Keeping up with these recommendations isn’t just about ticking off a box on a checklist. For children, it means fewer missed days of school and play. For adults, it reduces the risk of severe complications, hospital visits, and time away from work or family. Just as importantly, staying vaccinated helps build a wall of protection around the most vulnerable members of our community, including tiny newborns who are too young for vaccines, loved ones undergoing cancer treatments, and neighbors with compromised immune systems.
Choosing to receive a vaccine is a personal decision that should start with an informed conversation. If you have questions or hesitation, our team is committed to listening to your concerns and answering questions with evidence-based facts.
We also believe financial barriers should never stand in the way of care. Promise participates in the Vaccines for Children (VFC) and Vaccines for Adults (VFA) programs, which help eligible individuals, including Medicaid recipients and uninsured or underinsured patients, receive recommended vaccines at little to no cost.
Staying proactive about immunizations is one of the simplest ways to protect your family. Whether your child needs routine shots before school, you need a booster review, or you want to talk through a few questions, our team is here for you.
