And support a wonderful cause at the same time.
Promise Community Health Center in Sioux Center will host “An Evening of Promise” – its seventh annual celebration and fundraiser – at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, at Terrace View Event Center in Sioux Center. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

“We have a wonderful time with all who attend,” said Nancy Dykstra, executive director of Promise. “It is a celebration of the promise fulfilled – as together we improve the health of the community and provide affordable health care to all who seek it.”
The evening will feature:
- Entertainment by 88improv, an improvisational comedy troupe from Omaha, NE;
- Dinner catered by Blue Mountain Culinary Emporium of Orange City;
- Presentation of the Addink Community Service Award;
- Silent auction to support Promise.
Former KTIV TV news anchor Kristie VerMulm of Sioux City will serve as the emcee for the evening. She said she is honored to do so on the behalf of Promise.

“As a journalist and former health reporter for KTIV Television, I was able to cover the creation of what was then called the Greater Sioux Community Health Center and its opening in 2008,” she said. “Nancy Dykstra and her team worked hard to provide quality health care to those in need for several years before federal funding was even granted. The work they do makes a difference in the lives of those they serve and the community as a whole. I look forward to helping them celebrate their achievements.”
88improv, the longest running improv comedy team in Omaha, will be savoring a homecoming of sorts as it brings its distinctive form of entertainment back to northwest Iowa. The troupe was founded in 2003 while its members attended Northwestern College in Orange City.
The four-member team, consisting of Steve Hydeen, Nate Schoenfeld, Timothy Schoenfeld and Sarah Schoenfeld, is sure to get the crowd engaged and laughing as it acts out impromptu skits using suggestions from audience members during its hourlong show.
Hydeen, who grew up on Orange City, said the troupe prides itself with a mission “to provide smart, clean, comedic, entertaining shows.”
“It’s been our experience that most people do not enjoy performing improvisation, yet they get a real thrill out of watching others present it for them,” he said. “88improv will also work to make the Promise event one that is personalized and tailored to this audience.”
Blue Mountain Culinary Emporium, one of the most renowned restaurants in northwest Iowa, will serve as the caterer for the event. Blue Mountain will offer a choice of slow-roasted certified angus roast beef, served with brandied Worcestershire peppercorn cream sauce, and roasted pork loin, served with a blueberry, shallot barbecue sauce, for its main entrees. Sides and a dessert also will be served.
The program will include the presentation of the fourth annual Addink Community Service Award. This year’s honorees will be Rob and Sharon Schelling of Sioux Center. They have participated in many rebuilding projects at disaster sites throughout North America during the past 25 years, including overseeing a reconstruction effort in the neighboring community of Rock Valley after the flood of 2014.
The event, which serves as Promise Community Health Center’s primary fundraiser every year, also will include a silent auction. Many great items – ranging from home-crafted or home-baked items to a package of four one-day passes to a Disney World theme park in Orlando, FL, a value of nearly $500 – will be auctioned off. A brief segment of live auction for a few select items also will be included in the program.
Nancy Dykstra, executive director for Promise, said “An Evening of Promise” is a good event for Promise to put on for the community every year.
“It provides an opportunity for Promise to pause and reflect on where the center has been – our history and mission – and where we are going – our vision,” she said. “We have the opportunity to thank the community and our individual and business and corporate donors for their support and to raise funds for the work we do as a nonprofit. We raise awareness by informing the community.”
