Promise Community Health Center is celebrating today, National Pharmacist Day 2022, by sharing with you all about a day in the life of our amazing Pharmacist, Doctor Kendra Borchers!
One of my favorite things about being the Pharmacist at Promise is being able to help patients improve their health. I am also grateful for the opportunity to collaborate and interact with different members of the healthcare team every day. Not only am I able to work with providers, but I also work closely with nurses, health coaches, medical assistants, and staff from different departments. Another one of my favorite things is the opportunity to share knowledge with patients and staff. Pharmacists are great sources of information and I enjoy being able to share information and answer questions.
I am able to work with the staff at Promise in a variety of ways. My office is located within the medical area, so I have the opportunity to collaborate in-person with various members of the healthcare team. I am also able to receive referrals through our electronic health system making myself accessible in person and electronically. I am able to work with providers in all areas regarding medications. This includes the selection of medication, the dosing of medication, and the dose adjustment of medication. I am able to assist providers with lab analysis and subsequent medication selection and dosage. I work closely with the population health team to help our patients manage their chronic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure.
I also serve as a resource for drug information questions for all members of the health care team. I have been keeping up to date with all the information regarding COVID-19 and COVID-19 vaccines and communicate any changes or updates with all of Promise’s staff. Throughout my time at Promise, I have also been able to work with other hospitals and clinics, especially throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. I have worked closely with the other healthcare facilities in Sioux County to collaborate and discuss strategies for the distribution and administration of COVID-19 vaccines in Sioux County.
As a pharmacist, I am asked many questions regarding medications. The biggest questions that I get asked as the Pharmacist at Promise are questions regarding medications and the correct way to take them and if there are any interactions between medications. Questions regarding medications tie into one of my biggest recommendations that I give patients and that is to take your medications as prescribed and to notify us if there are any changes. This ensures that any changes or modifications that we make to you medication regimen is based on accurate and current information.
I also urge patients to call with any questions. I am here to serve our patients and the community and am happy to answer any medication or vaccine-related questions that staff or patients may have.
As the Pharmacist at Promise, I am able to work collaboratively with other members of the health care team to help improve the health of our patients and community. I am able to assist in a variety of different areas like medication information, disease state management, and vaccine education.
