Yaby Doornink, one of Promise Community Health Center’s mental health therapists, began working at Promise in June of 2021.
Yaby received her Bachelors of Social Work degree from Dordt University and went on to receive her Masters in Social Work degree from the University of Iowa. Before coming to Promise, she had worked in a variety of positions in the social work field. She worked at Plains Area Mental Health Center as a school-based therapist, at Sioux Center Health as a Social and Cultural Services Manager, and then as a Social Worker. Yaby was drawn to Promise Community Health Center because of its commitment to increasing access to high-quality, integrated services.
Some of the mental health services Yaby offers are EMDR, DBT, CBT, and solution-focused therapy. She also offers individual therapy for children at least eight years old, adolescents, and adults. Her role includes working alongside Promise Social Worker, Kailee Jenness, to connect patients to outside resources or to any additional help or support they might need. She also works closely with other medical providers such as Emily Leinen, to work toward the best outcome for patients.
Her favorite part of her role as a mental health therapist is being able to walk alongside each patient and be a part of their journey to reaching their therapeutic goals. On this, she says “I am encouraged and excited to work in a setting continuously advocating to decrease the judgment and stigma surrounding mental health. Promise is actively working towards improving patient access by breaking down financial, language, and transportation barriers.” She is grateful to work at a health center where staff works together to improve the well-being of patients and the community.

Yaby wants Promise patients to know that each therapy session is tailored for each patient to help them with their individual needs. The therapy sessions a patient has might not give them all the answers, but they can help them find tools to begin healing. She says, “Taking care of your mental health is important to living a well-balanced life. Mental health does not discriminate, there is no specific age or type of person it affects.” Yaby is passionate about continuing to serve the community and creating a safe space for healing, processing, and growth in a judgment-free environment.
As a mental health therapist, Yaby meets with patients and helps them find a type of therapy that will work best for them and their goals. Yaby is excited to play a role in Promise’s new mental health campaign, HERE FOR EVERY STEP.
