Jennifer Plathe, one of Promise Community Health Center’s mental health therapists, began working at Promise in November of 2022.
Jennifer received a bachelor’s degree in Human Services with a double minor in psychology and sociology from Buena Vista University. She then went on to get a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Iowa. Before starting at Promise, Jennifer previously served as a Social Worker for Orange City Area Health System for almost six years. Jennifer also teaches a course in the social work department at Northwestern College which helps prepare students to work in the mental health field.
She was drawn to Promise because of its strong emphasis on healthcare accessibility for all patients from a wide variety of demographics. She feels Promise does an excellent job serving patients in many different ways. Promise prioritizes the social determinants of health and Jennifer is very passionate about this. She also appreciates how Promise cultivates a positive and inviting atmosphere.
Some of the mental health services Jennifer offers as a collaborative, holistic, and strengths-based practitioner are Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavioral therapy. She works in assisting and supporting patients to be the author of their own lives. Highlighting the strengths of different theories to fit the client’s identified needs. While doing this, she also keeps careful consideration of patients’ cultural concerns and practices.
I believe in focusing on the strengths people have within themselves to reframe difficult issues and grow in a purposeful direction. My goal as a mental health provider is to empower individuals, couples, and families to unapologetically embrace their unique journeys while striving to evolve into healthier and more fulfilled versions of themselves.
Jennifer would like Promise patients to know that her hope is that through the therapeutic process, she can help patients acknowledge the various unique contexts which impact their lives, connect with their strengths, and learn new ways to live in wholeness. She believes everyone deserves a safe and healing environment to navigate through life’s difficulties where they can recognize their worth and potential as individuals. It is her hope to create a warm, non-judgmental, and open space where patients can find healing and growth.
